Car industry experts have shared a mini checklist to help you avoid MOT failure to avoid noncompliance inconveniences like retesting fees, insurance problems, repair costs, and fines.
Callum Butler from ALA Insurance notes that one of the most common MOT pitfalls is motorists failing to keep up with their vehicle’s maintenance.
According to ALA Insurance, essential vehicle maintenance that drivers often overlook includes checking if:
Lights and indicators are working properly
Tyres are safe and legal
Brakes have new enough pads and responsive performance
Exhaust system contains no damage
Windscreen is clear of chips and cracks
Suspension components aren’t excessively worn
A vehicle’s lights should remain functional at total operating capacity with clean lenses for maximum visibility.

Still, many drivers wait too long to replace lights since they degrade gradually with no immediate signs of malfunction, similar to brakes.
Unusual noises and a spongy or overly-firm brake pedal can indicate a need for brake service.
Tyres should contain a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm and no cracks, bulges, or uneven wear patterns.
ALA Insurance warns that drivers may overlook exhaust system damages that trigger MOT failure, as diagnosis requires specific skills and tools.

Motorists must also search for windscreen chips and cracks, as these defects can cause MOT failure due to reduced driver visibility.
Lastly, ALA Insurance emphasises the significance of motorists looking for signs of suspension wear.
The symptoms of a faulty car suspension system can include:
Worn bushings
Leaking shock absorbers
Damaged springs
Excessive bouncing or swaying
Abnormal noises over bumps or uneven roads
