Mario is coming back with a new 2D platformer, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, this fall, with unique power-ups that could only work in the world of Mario and multiplayer fun involving a variety of playable characters. This game will be a return to the more traditional platforming roots of the series, with a feel more like Super Mario 3D World than some of the other recent titles have been. While there is much that hasn't yet been revealed, in the wondrous world that Mario Wonder lets players explore there are all sorts of whimsical changes to the environment and, of course, the fun new Elephant Suit.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder will be similar to 3D World's multiplayer ability by offering up to four players to join the fun of a local co-op game. Sadly, no online multiplayer is announced at this time, although local co-op play can be a fun experience for these types of games. Quirky level designs, brightly colored graphics, and all the fun that one imagines with a traditional Super Mario title appear in the trailer for the new game, which is coming out a lot sooner than one might expect given the suddenness of its announcement at a recent Nintendo Direct.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder Releases October 20, 2023
Super Mario Bros. Wonder is set to be released on October 20, 2023, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. This is adding the mustachioed plumber to the ever-growing list of big games releasing in 2023 and possibly will add yet another contender to what is sure to be a hotly contested 2023 Game of the Year debate. The side-scrolling 2D Mario Wonder will also likely see some benefit by coming out so soon after the Super Mario Bros. movie and will be followed next year by a new yet-untitled Princess Peach game that has been announced as well.
The announcement trailer for Super Mario Bros. Wonder debuted during the June 2023 Nintendo Direct event alongside other exciting titles as well, including the remake of Super Mario RPG. Its surprise announcement was a welcome one to many Mario fans and has stirred excitement online with many platforming fans looking for where to purchase the game to make sure they have it as soon as possible this fall.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder Pre-Orders
Currently, there are no pre-order bonuses announced for Super Mario Bros. Wonder or any special edition releases. There are several stores that are offering pre-orders for the game already, however, including the Nintendo eShop and My Nintendo Store. Check with a local game store to see what pre-order options they have available, but there are already listings to purchase Super Mario Bros. Wonder from more traditional retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, and GameStop.
There may be additional pre-order options and bonus offers available a bit closer to launch, and more information about Super Mario Bros. Wonder is expected to be shown later this summer.
Playable Characters In Super Mario Bros. Wonder
As a multiplayer game, Super Mario Bros. Wonder offers several playable characters aside from the iconic duo of Mario and Luigi. At this time, there have been six playable characters revealed as well as some recolor options for Yoshi to create even more possibilities. In the trailer there is a scene shown where four different color variants of Yoshi are running together, presumably controlled by four players, which leads to a fun concept of playing through Super Mario Bros. Wonder as a group of just four Yoshi characters. Here are each of the six playable characters that have been revealed through the trailer:
- Mario
- Luigi
- Princess Peach
- Princess Daisy
- Toad
- Yoshi
While the trailer for the game shows a yellow-colored version of Toad, the game artwork includes a blue version. This might imply that characters other than Yoshi also have recolored options. This would make sense so that if in multiplayer modes players each wanted to play the same character, they can, but nothing has been confirmed yet regarding this possibility.
New Power-Ups In Super Mario Bros. Wonder
The power-ups in the Mario universe have always been a unique and fun experience that can lend itself to not only creating humorous moments in the games but also have become an iconic mainstay when anyone is thinking about Super Mario games. Super Mario Bros. Wonder showed off several power-ups in the announcement trailer in quick and chaotic bursts of clips, and likely there will be more announced regarding these abilities at a future Nintendo Direct. For now, there appear to be at least six new power-ups in Super Mario Bros. Wonder for players to experiment with.

- Spiky Ball Mario
- Parachute Hat Mario
- Elephant Mario
- Wonder Seed
It is uncertain whether some of these are actually abilities that come from the Wonder Flower rather than unique power-ups that Mario and friends can grab. Additionally, the Wonder Seed could either be a new power-up or possibly a collectible item for each of the levels, as has been done in previous Mario titles. Either way, each of these new items that were shown in the announcement trailer has exciting possibilities that are sure to add a lot of delight and wonder to the game.
Mario seems to be a name synonymous with Nintendo and even video gaming itself. Seeing that with Super Mario Bros. Wonder Nintendo is taking things back to a bit more of a classic side-scrolling platformer feel is something that has made a lot of fans excited, and the music that goes along with the trailer is a catchy tune that is perfectly fitting the whimsical nature of the game. Super Mario Bros. Wonder still has a lot of unknowns surrounding it, with much left to be revealed by developers and discovered by prospective players, but it already appears to be a game that will bring a lot of joy to many this fall when it is released.
