Velda Delila Stotser - March 05, 1935 - March 21, 2024

Departed: 03/21/2024 (Hubbard)

Obituary Preview: Velda Stotser, age 89, of Hubbard, IA, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2024 at the Hanson Family Hospital in Iowa Falls, IA.

Velda Delila (Balvanz) Stotser was born March 5, 1935, at the family home, rural Hubbard, to George and Delila (Klaffke) Balvanz. She attended country school through 8th grade and graduated from Eldora High School in 1953. Velda was united in marriage to George Stotser on December 4,1954 at St. John Lutheran Church in Hubbard. To this marriage was born three children, James, Dee Ann and Peggy.

Velda was a farm wife for most of her life helping with chores and spring and fall work. She had the proverbial “green” thumb; just about anything she planted, grew into beautiful plants. George built a greenhouse onto the house allowing Velda to start producing seedlings in late winter and would spend hours tending to her plants. After the three kids left the house, Velda took a job at the Eldora Greenhouse. It was truly a dream job using her talents and love of plants.

Velda loved to play cards, especially Pepper and 500 and she loved the old country western songs. When she wasn’t reading about growing plants, she would be making dolls, ceramic figurines, and teddy bears. She brought much joy to friends and family as so many of those hand-crafted items were gifted. To say Velda liked cats would be a gross understatement. She had her barn cats and her house cats, and both were treated with love and kindness.

Velda was a life-long member of St. John Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Velda is survived by her children James (Brenda) Stotser of Iowa Falls, DeeAnn Garmoe from Windsor Heights, and Peggy Stotser of Cedar Rapids; sister Alana McCleary of Lake Ozark, MO; grandchildren Dustin (Madelaine), Bjorn, Guthrie (Cortney), Leif (Fairley), Nicole (Travis) Haney and TJ Garmoe; great-grandchildren Lilia, Maddox, Xander, Coco, Rowan, Camilla, Kalypso, Emily, Evelyn, Hudson, Eros and Ada.

Velda was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother Eldon.

Edith Esther Fichtner - November 14, 1943 - February 26, 2024

Departed: 02/26/2024 (Hubbard)

Obituary Preview: Edith “Edie” Fichtner, age 80, of Ankeny, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully in her sleep on Monday, February 26, 2024.

Edie was born November 14, 1943, the third daughter to Rev. Arthur and Martha (Wigand) Kruetzmann in Des Moines, Iowa. She graduated from Hubbard High School in 1961 and then went on to attend Evangelical School of Nursing, graduating with her RN in 1964.

Edie was blessed to have met her husband, Royce Jeffrey Fichtner while she attended Hubbard High School. They were happily married for almost sixty years, marrying on November 7, 1964 at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Nashua, Iowa. Her children will always remember how their parents laughed at the same things, joked happily, and teased each other, but always in love.

She worked as a nurse at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, Iowa and Story County Hospital in Nevada, Iowa to put Royce through college. They followed Royce’s career from Hardin County to Grundy County, and eventually to Marshall County where they lived for thirty-four years. Along the way they had three children, and Edie loved and cherished the role of being a stay-at-home mom to raise them. Eventually, she returned to work to help put them through college and enjoyed a new career as a paraprofessional helping children with special needs. Along the way, she served as a Church Elder, Deacon, Sunday School and Bible School Teacher and also helped with children’s worship activities. After retirement, they moved to Ankeny to be near their youngest grandchildren.

Edie doted on her children and always taught them the importance of prayer, being thankful, and finding a church home. In later years her grandchildren became the focus of her life, and she spent many hours trying to teach them the things she had learned as a child from her own mother. Her grandchildren will forever remember baking, doing crafts, going on fun outings to unique places with Grandma and Grandpa, and never-ending reminders to take “little bites” while chewing food.

Edie also cared deeply for her family and neighbors. She looked forward to her many, regular calls with her two sisters. She enjoyed making family members their favorite treats, and always looked to help with the little things that made life easier for others. She was always there to listen and the first to offer help, bringing meals to the homes of sick neighbors and putting the comfort of others before her own needs.

Left to cherish her memory, is her husband Royce Fichtner of Ankeny; her three children Christine (Robert) Yoerger of Bettendorf, Derek (Minjeong) Fichtner of Seoul, South Korea, and Jason “Royce” (Julie) Fichtner of Ankeny; along with her five grandchildren, Sarah and Nolan Yoerger, Mina Park Fichtner, and Teddy and Josie Fichtner. She is also survived by her two sisters Eileen Kruse and Evelyn Reifschneider, brother-in-law Rodney (Carolyn) Fichtner, brother-in-law Gene Steelman, and many wonderful nieces, nephews, and cousins on both sides of the family.

Edie was preceded in death by her parents Rev. Arthur and Martha Kruetzmann, mother and father-in-law Ernest & Elizabeth Fichtner, brothers-in-law Ernest Kruse, Mervin Reifschneider, Dave Larson, and sisters-in-law Audrey Steelman, Patsy King, and Elaine Larson.

She will be remembered as a loving, kind, caring, and giving mother and grandmother who always put the needs of her family before her own. Edie’s family was always her first priority.

Obituary Preview: Mary Louise (Lou) Johnson, age 90, of Iowa Falls and formerly of Ames, Iowa, died September 20th, 2023, at the Hansen Family Hospital (hospice unit), Iowa Falls, Iowa.

Mary Louise (Carmody) Johnson was born on the Carmody farm southwest of Zearing to Patrick Joseph Carmody and Margaret L. (Peddicord) Carmody. She was the youngest in the family of six daughters: Verda, Velma, Barbara, Isabelle, and Ardella.

Mary Lou Johnson was baptized on July 4th, 1933, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Zearing, Iowa. Mary Lou’s First Communion was June 17th, 1940, at Sacred Heart Church in St Anthony and she was confirmed on May 4th, 1945, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in St. Anthony, Iowa.

Mary Lou attended a one room school in the country until 5th grade. She then attended the public school in Zearing. She was an avid reader in school and continued reading religiously into her 80’s until her vision began to fail.

Mary Lou began helping her father with the farm chores at a very young age. Chores consisted of caring for chickens, sows, horses and even driving a team of horses during thrashing and hay season. In addition to chores, she helped with a large garden, fruit trees, and canning. Mary Lou always loved her life on the farm! The farm girl in her was a part of who she was throughout life. She looked forward to fall and being able to see her son-in-law, grandson and crew work through harvest. She was a passenger in the combine just a couple of years ago. When Mary Lou was in Jr. High School, her dad became ill, so she and her sisters were then responsible for all the livestock chores. World War II had started and there was no electricity. All rural electrical development was stopped. During this time on the farm, they had to use ice boxes to keep food cool. Ration books were a way of life during the war and her family used those books (stamps) to purchase sugar, car gas, and shoes. These were tough times and her family worked hard and were fortunate not to lose the family farm. She often talked about how her “mom’s egg money” (cash from the sale of eggs) saved their farm!

Mary Lou and Donald E. Johnson of Zearing were married in 1949. The wedding ceremony was in the St. Anthony Catholic Church. Their marriage was blessed with four children: Douglas, Maridon, Renae, and Joseph. Mary Lou was a full-time mother and stayed active in St. Gabriel Catholic Church. She and her family lived in Zearing until 1969. After the closing of their family business, Johnson Hardware in Zearing, the family moved to Hubbard, Iowa. During her retirement years, she lived in Ames, Iowa.

After the children were older, Mary Lou entered the workforce. She met so many wonderful people throughout her various jobs and continued those friendships throughout her life. Her most memorable jobs were at the Crawford Elementary School in Ames as Secretary to the Principal and at North Star Elementary in Anchorage, Alaska. She had a genuine love for the kids and looked forward every day to helping the elementary students and parents.

She enjoyed her many coffee groups, watching the grandchildren and great grandchildren participate in school activities, reading, spending time with family and friends, and her many summer family vacations at Leech Lake, MN.

Mary Lou is survived by her children: Douglas (Sheila) Johnson of Webster City, Iowa; Maridon (Rodney) Harris of The Villages, FL; Renae (Paul) Zoske of Iowa Falls; and Joseph Johnson of Des Moines; Grandchildren: Erin Klitgaard, Devin Johnson; Michael (Sun) Johnson; James (Shannon) Harris; Patrick (Allyson) Harris; Mick (Stacy) Zoske, Eric (Nicole) Zoske; and Daniel Johnson; Eleven great- grandchildren; Sisters: Barbara Hart, Ardella Untrauer, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Donald E Johnson in 1981; her parents Patrick and Margaret Carmody; three sisters; Verda Holveck, Velma Sedlak, and Isabelle Jones.

Departed: 07/02/2023 (Hubbard)

Obituary Preview: JoEllen Nelson, age 71, of Eldora, IA, passed away on Sunday, July 2, 2023 at her home.

JoEllen (Donahue) Nelson was born on October 28, 1952, the third of eight children in her family, JoEllen’s favorite childhood memories were getting into trouble at her grandfather Den Otter’s farm with her little brothers. Later in life, she wrote these memories down in what she’d hoped would become a children’s book.

She stood out in her large family by being an excellent basketball player, competing in the Iowa State 6 on 6 High School State Tournament her sophom*ore year at Ballard High School. She also loved softball. Through sports, she got to know her neighbor and the drummer of the Ballard pep band, Kevin Nelson. Jo helped support her young family by manufacturing at 3M. During her time there she made many friends and welcomed her two daughters, Sara followed by Amy. She’d be there for over 20 years before officially retiring and following her passion for teaching young children. It was clear Jo was a baby whisperer and loved all her nieces and nephews, many she babysat happily.
