WOBURN PEE WEE FOOTBALL1959 - 2024
“Celebrating over 60 Years”
All of our coaches are trained and certified in the USA Football Head's Up Blocking and Tackling program along with being fully insured with USA Football. In January of 1959 Charles “Chuck” Greene introduced Youth Football in the City of Woburn to several men interested in youth activities. After much sales work by Chuck, he gathered together eight men and held the first meeting at the V.F.W. Post 543 on Walnut Street.

In the spring of 1960 plans were formulated and arrangements made for the first official business meeting, which was held on June 13that the Woburn Y.M.C.A.At this meeting the Woburn Pee Wee Football Association, Inc. was formed. The Charter members formed the Board of Directors and officers.Jim McCauley, past president of Woburn Little League was the first president.Bob Rooney the VP, Chuck Greene the first treasurer & Bob Rickard was the first secretary. The remaining charter members of the Board of Directors were Mike Dorondi, Bing Crosby, and Kelsey Cook.

In the fall, registration was held with over a hundred boys participating. The made up the Varsity Trojans and four city league teams. We were met with exceptional financial help from the City Departments, businesses, and fraternal organizations along with many citizens of the City of Woburn, who gave so generously to our fund raising drive.Their interest watching the city league games and following the Varsity Trojans, gave the spirit necessary for the youth of the community. This contributed to the tremendous growth of the program. As the interest grew we were able to start equipping our city league.

In 1963 Bob Rickard took over as President, and under his leadership, the program increased the city league to six teams as the interest began to grow by leaps and bounds. That year some young girls asked one of the coaches if they could cheer for his team. His permission developed interest among the mothers, and they formed ladies auxiliary. This hard working group, in no small way, has made tremendous contributions to the program’s success by registering and training cheerleaders, selling refreshments at all the games to raise funds.

In 1968 the program continued to grow under outstanding leadership with Tom Williams as president. In 1971 the energetic Carl Provost became president who dedicated much time and effort to help the youth of our city and keep the aims of the program high.As a result with the work and dedication of so many people the program had grown to over 300 boys registered for football and over 200 girls participating as cheerleaders.

The program then had ten teams playing Inter city competition, plus the Varsity Trojan A and B Teams. The city league was divided into two divisions, Senior Division, which consisted of four teams and a Junior Division, which consisted of six teams, each team playing a full ten game schedule. With the fantastic interest of our sponsors and the people of the City of Woburn all teams where fitted with the best football equipment available.

In 1973 Joe Tarby took over as president and programs’ success continued.Joe was succeeded by Gerald Canada in 1979 and the program continued to flourish. In 1980 Joe Tarby took over once again as president, it is through his along with many others hard work and dedication, that the program is still going strong to this day.
