Bryce Kaiser⚡ on LinkedIn: How we ideate and validate new ventures (2024)

I missed last week, so there will be two posts this week. Today is about how we ideate and validate ventures. Step 1: Co-ideate with a corporate partner. We workshop their existing idea or generate potentially 100 more ideas in a single working session. Step 2: We build out a business model that works on paper. If there are still multiple ideas to be considered, we do a prioritization and opportunity mapping session to get down to the 1 or 2 winners. This takes 2-4 weeks.Step 3: We run experiments and start generating demand for the venture. We work through our riskiest assumptions until the business is relatively de-risked. This is where we co-invest with the partner. This takes 1-2 months.Step 4: If we hit our success criteria (default is 10 pre-sold B2B customers), we are out of validation. We move on to building the production ready solution, staffing a permanent team, and scaling operations. Some simple math: For every 12 ideas that make it to Step 2, only 2 ideas make it to Step 3, and only 1 idea should make it Step 4. More details in the post! ---I'm sharing what I've learned over the last year of building a venture studio. I thought I knew a lot before starting this journey, but I have learned a tremendous amount through daily operations, connecting with others, and participating in the Morrow Venture Studio Boot Camp. I have 100+ pages of stuff already written that I'm releasing in newsletter format. Consider subscribing if you're curious about venture studios. ---#venturestudio #startupstudio #venturebuilder #buildinpublic #startupfactory #startups

Embarking on the journey of innovation, the concept of venture studios is gaining momentum. However, there's common confusion about the difference between Startup Studios and Venture Studios lingers. Let's dive into the intricacies between two pioneering concepts: Startup Studios and Venture Studios:🚀Startup Studios: The Creative BuilderAt its core, a Startup Studio is a collaborative powerhouse that conceives, develops, and launches multiple startups under its umbrella. 🌱 Think of it as a creative incubator, where diverse talents come together to ideate, prototype, and scale new ventures. The focus here is on birthing ideas from scratch, fostering a culture of experimentation, and providing comprehensive support to turn visionary concepts into tangible businesses.- Idea Generation: Creating new concepts from the ground up.- Resource Sharing: Shared talent, expertise, and infrastructure.- Rapid Prototyping: Quick validation and iteration of ideas.🌐Venture Studio: The Investment EngineOn the flip side, a Venture Studio is more akin to an investment engine that collaborates with external founders and startups. 🚀 This model revolves around identifying promising startups, investing capital, and offering strategic guidance to help them reach their full potential. It's all about maximizing the impact of existing startups and scaling them efficiently.Key Features:- External Partnerships: Collaborating with external founders.- Strategic Investment: Providing capital and resources for growth.- Accelerated Scaling: Focusing on scaling existing ventures. To summarize, while both startup studios and venture studios share the goal of fostering startups, they differ in ownership and investment models, approaches to ideation, levels of support, risk-reward dynamics, and their role in determining exit strategies. What are your thoughts on the Startup Studio vs. Venture Studio dynamic? Share your insights and experiences in the comments below! 🚀🌐 #StartupStudio #VentureStudio #InnovationJourney #Entrepreneurship

Venture Studios have a superpower that Venture Capital doesn't 🪄They get to choose the founders of the startups they incubate.Studios bet on the horse and hand-pick the jockey - that's POWER 🏇Yesterday I debated the merits of the Studio model with a very accomplished GP. He didn't like Studios, simply didn't believe in them... until I said one thing. This one concept might not have been enough to convince said investor to change his mind entirely about Studios, but he did have to hand it to me. "Good point" he said - "elaborate".Studio leaders know that investors are skeptical. They think Studios are unconventional, confusing, and unproven. And they're not wrong. But spewing a bunch of data about the success rates of studio-born startups or accelerated speed to market isn't going to assuage their fears - in fact, it's likely to make them more suspicious 🤨 What investors need is solid logic or as I like to say "make it make sense".You can do this in a variety of ways but this tactic was particularly compelling.I asked the investor what the most important criteria was for his investments and he said what I knew he would: the aptitude and capabilities of the founder. To which I replied, but you don't get to choose the founder. You might love an idea and see the market opportunity but if you don't like the founder, the investment goes nowhere.Studios get to choose the founders of the ventures they incubate. They strategically choose markets, systematically de-risk ideas, and evaluate dozens of founders to find the exact right fit. This, more than anything else, influences the ultimate success or failure of the venture.Next time you pitch investors, be sure to present this Studio superpower 🚀#StartupStudio #VentureStudio #VentureBuilder #Pitching

Startup studios fail in one key area. They make it hard to invest. They confuse the investor. Investors, drawn in by the allure and performance of a disruptive business model, often find themselves lost in the labyrinth of operations and investment details with a studio. It's like a mirage in the desert - what seemed clear from a distance becomes a haze up close. Studios already have an uphill battle with their differentiated business model → building new companies and creating their own dealflow. Compared to investing in existing companies, with existing teams, generally known metrics, and with financials. Consider the scenario: a venture fund. Simple, a single legal structure (LLP/LLC) operating next to a management company. A consistent raise structure for peace of mind, with periodic capital calls of committed funds. It is the straightforward 2 & 20 fund structure. Offering a clear return profile untouched by complications often seen in startup studios. The plot thickens when we lift the hood on startup studios. A myriad of legal structures, each with its own return profile and tax challenge, often scares investors off. Custom financial models, impact of future funds, risk and compliance issues; the list is a relentless. But why is it so messy for studios? The answer lies in their capital intensity. For a studio, the initial phase is a capital-intensive battleground, and the traditional 2% management fee is far from feasible. Only when they can attract a hefty sum of $50M or more, the annual 2% fee provides a sustainable operating budget, easing the funding crunch. But the catch 22? Reaching this stage can be a battle in itself. Startup studios, it's time for some soul-searching. You've been brilliant simplifying the company creation process for your portfolio companies. Now, it's time to apply the same magic to your investment structure. Because let's face it, in this fiercely competitive world, simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. Do you agree? How might you simplify it? Let's brainstorm together in the comments below! Your insights could be the golden ticket to solving this major capital challenge. #startupstudio #venturecapital #pe #startups
